WIP: Impaler 10, nearly done

The Impaler is just about finished... all that's left are the spear heads.

I tried grinding stones, but they were too hard. Much harder than the blue stone I used on Madrak.

Then, I tried smashing and chiselling stones... which also didn't work.

Now I have some fossilized sharks teeth on order.

While we wait for that, here are some of the finishing touches...

Raw Flesh

I had some fun painting up the chickens on his hip. I googled up "raw chicken" and found some example photos on how to paint them.

From black, I painted a thin layer of pink.

Followed by a khaki.

After that, I red-washed them. In the recesses, I went thick, but on the raised areas, I used a thin wash.

Finally, I did some highlighting with a yellow-white.

Below, are the close up photos... loving my digital micro cam.

High Quality Jewels

At first I used the nail jewels on his bandoleer, but they just didn't look right.

So, I found some larger and more realistic jewels on sale at  Michaels. (Hobby Lobby) They're from Swarovski.

Now, here are the final-ish shots, minus the spear tips.... These are also varnished, which you can see clouds the crystals. The above photo has the varnish cleaned off the crystals for a sharper look.

Take a look at my Step by Step page for the entire Hordebloods project.

Here you will find each model broken down into links showing each step:

  1. Amazing as always. Those spear shafts are so well done they just look real. I like how vibrant the skin is in contrast to everything else. Seeing your leather all complete too makes me really appreciate that stippling technique.

  2. Heh, I probably should have mentioned re: spears, that I cut and drilled out the originals. Those a just toothpicks, covered in black gesso with roughly streaked drybrushing to pick out the natural wood texture and a brown wash.

Once I put the sharks teeth on, i have some thin leather to wrap them a little with, which I'll wash a bit to blend with the rest of the mini.

After fielding him Sunday, Im thinking of highlighting a few other areas a little stronger to add some more contrast.
