The ongoing chronicle and my first attempt at posting Work In Progress shots, this is my entry for the Massive Voodoo Mad Max Car Competition. I'll list them all on my Step by Step page, or you can view the current WIP series.
I realized I forgot to mention one final thing - how I finished off the ice.
By using a darker wax beneath the lighter wax, there's a nice shading going on. The different levels of wax also use the fake snow underneath look very natural.
I added a layer of gloss varnish to the ice, and extended it to the shoreline. All the fake snow I'd put around the ice absorbed the varnish (a natural absorption, rather than a thick covering) and this had the effect of bringing the "ice" into the shore to create a slush effect - again playing to the hopeful idea of the thaw.
While the varnish was drying, I threw some fake snow flakes on, which absorbed into the varnish. I also added some tiny little beads.
Before the varnish was completely dry, (but not while it was still super wet) I began building up the snow around the tires. That meant piling my fake snow mix down and dusting the excess off. Some of the snow was also absorbed into the varnish, which led to a slushy look around the ice.
